Scrum is an issue?

No.

I once said that Scrum was a cause of evil in the Agile world, because of its certifications. But that was not a Scrum unique or specific problem, back in 2006.

Certifications were all around the world at that time, as a way to engage communities. To be more specific, by the time Scrum certification started in Brazil, I was working already 4 years certified as a “requirement” to work. It was a developer / instructor related certification.

Scrum was supposed to be an attempt to bring the power back to development teams from the “project gantt can’t chart managers”. But in Brazil, most of those people became Scrum Masters in their job descriptions. Too bad. 😦

That should never happen at first, since the Scrum Master is just a role and the person acting as that should be an enabler to help teams to grow and learn new stuff. Because of that, a Scrum Master should become “useless” in its own function, meaning related teams are self organized. Doing that, a Scrum Master can move to new teams and new challenges.

Every team have its own replenishment and prioritization structure. They also have a way to synchronize and to improve. They can do that using Scrum or any other flavor of iteration or incremental process, like XP, FDD for instance. Or their own practices. They can institutionalize roles like Scrum Master or Product Owner. That’s a choice. I consider metaphors we can use to discover, deliver and produce value.

The best thing about Scrum? Its principles and values.
