Are we ready?

We are the workers of this new world! Here we go!! How? Are we ready? With so many things happening… layoffs, toxic management and companies… lack of trust and transparency… how can we start this “new-world-knowledge-worker” journey?

I have a take on this…

At first I believe we need a minimum set of skills to play this game.
I would choose these:

  • Decomposition: can you get a big problem and turn it into small problems? To break down or to slice, are terms I’m using to play with this skill.
  • Pattern recognition: can you notice trends or patterns? Can you understand something is repeating? Can we make it a standard? So we may have a pattern.
  • Abstraction: what’s relevant in this case?
  • Algorithms: can you understand steps needed to solve something?

With those four skills we are able to do a lot. And that’s the theory of computational thinking. You can follow Jeannette Wing to know more about this subject.

In the work “Building a Common Language for Skills at Work – A Global Taxonomy” (Jan/2021/World Economic Forum) there are more skills we should look for:

  1. Analytical thinking and innovation
  2. Active learning and learning strategies
  3. Complex problem-solving
  4. Critical thinking and analysis
  5. Creativity, originality and initiative

Need one to focus? I would choose learning strategies. Later you will be able to create learning projects and define different strategies to evolve in other aspects.

How do you see yourself evolving in all these skills? And how are you moving forward in hiring people based on these skills?
